born in 1950. He took the degree in Medicine in 1975, the specialization in Internal Medicine in 1980 and in Rheumatology in 1984. From 1975 to 1980 he was clinical assistant in Rheumatology, from 1980 to 1992 he was clinical investigator in Rheumatology, from 1992 to 1999 Associate Professor of
Rheumatology, from November 1, 1999 he has been Full Professor of
Rheumatology and from November 1, 2000 he has been Chief of the Rheumatology Unit of the Second University of Naples.
Gabriele Valentini has published 398 papers out
of whom 101 on peer reviewed journals. The scientific activity has been devoted to a number of aspects of inflammatory rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus
erythematosus, dermatopolymyositis and, above all, systemic sclerosis, about which he has investigated clinical-epidemiological (subsetting),
pathophysiological (fixed vascular system), clinical (heart and joint involvement), clinimetric (activity criteria) and therapeutic aspects (cyclophosphamide).
